IN THIS ISSUE:
NOW commends the Department of Health and Human Services for issuing new guidelines for insurance plans to cover women's preventive health services under the Affordable Care Act and urges the department not to allow so-called refusal or conscience clauses to undermine women's access to birth control. The debt ceiling agreement deals a serious blow to women's economic security. It will impose $1 trillion in cuts to family planning clinics, food stamps, college tuition assistance, child care and other programs that disproportionately serve and employ women. The second part of the deal is likely to include cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and possibly Social Security. Read more »
On July 22, NOW expressed concern that President Obama was about to agree to a deficit reduction package that would disproportionately harm women -- without even bothering to consult with women leaders in Congress. Read more »
At the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the repeal of DOMA on July 20, NOW distributed a letter urging committee members to approve the Respect for Marriage Act of 2011 (S. 598), which would repeal critical parts of DOMA. Read more »
