NOW leaders and allies just wrapped up nine days of standing outside Dr. LeRoy Carhart's clinic in Germantown, Md., day and night, rain or shine, and I'm happy to report: Operation Rescue has gone home after their so-called "Summer of Mercy 2.0."

Please help us continue to defend brave abortion providers like Dr. Carhart who save women's lives every day.

The true goal of Operation Rescue's hateful event is best described by the gun chalked on the sidewalk by these "pro-life" extremists this past Monday morning. Indeed, the original "Summer of Mercy" in 1991 shut down the late Dr. George Tiller's clinic for six weeks, led to thousands of arrests and was acknowledged by convicted murderer Scott Roeder as making him "more aware" of Dr. Tiller.

But this time around was different! In the run-up to the siege, the National NOW Action Center worked around the clock, placing hundreds of phone calls to supporters in the Washington, D.C., metro area, coordinating rides and trainings, and welcoming NOW grassroots leadership from around the country into our neighborhood.

I couldn't be prouder of our peaceful pro-choice presence. We succeeded in sending Operation Rescue home without incident. We succeeded in mobilizing hundreds upon hundreds of activists. We succeeded in sending a clear message to the community that we will not allow a small group of dangerous terrorists to interfere with women's fundamental right to access abortion care, and the heroic doctors and clinic professionals who ensure that right every day.
