You are receiving this special, targeted alert because Patty Murray or John Kerry is your senator, and they need to receive calls from their constituents right way.
Murray is a co-chair and Kerry a member of the congressional "super committee" charged with reducing the federal budget by $1.5 trillion. They need to hear our message loud and clear: Tax the millionaires, and leave Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid alone.
Women disproportionately rely on these programs, because they have fewer resources to fall back on when times get tough due to a lifetime of unequal pay.
Recently, both Murray and Kerry proposed to cut Social Security benefits and to cut Medicare and Medicaid by $500 billion. These vital programs provide income security and health care to women across the U.S., especially women of color, women with lower incomes, and the oldest retirees.
Your phone call has unusual power today. A handful of Congress members serving on the super committee will decide the fate of these programs. Your senator is one of them.
Please call 1-866-251-4044 today, and ask for Sen. Patty Murray (if you live in Washington state) or Sen. John Kerry (if you live in Massachusetts), to tell them:
» Please oppose any and all cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in the super committee.
» This includes no Social Security COLA cut.
» Congress needs to stop preserving tax breaks for Wall Street, millionaires and billionaires and taking money away from women and their families who desperately need it.
» Women need jobs, not cuts.
Social Security does not add a penny to the deficit -- it should not even be under discussion. The average income of Medicare beneficiaries is about $22,000 a year. And as more and more people lose employer-provided health insurance, the last thing women, communities of color, people with disabilities and low-income children need is for the federal government to slash the program.
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid did not cause the run-up in federal deficits. The women of the U.S. did not cause the deficit. We have George W. Bush's huge tax cuts for the rich, the unpaid costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and the Great Recession caused by the crash on Wall Street to thank for that.
Politicians in Washington shouldn't balance the budget on the backs of women who live paycheck-to-paycheck and contribute so much to this nation.
Please call 1-866-251-4044 today to tell your senator: No Cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Please forward this message to everyone you know in your state -- your friends, family, co-workers, and networks of allied organizations, even your volleyball team!
The super committee's deadline for a proposal is Nov. 23, but they need to hear from us NOW!
