NOW Presidents: Two Sign on Letters Due May 1

NOW Presidents: Two Sign on Letters Due May 1

April 29, 2013

Dear NOW Leaders,

Our allies at the National Partnership for Women and Families are hoping to get many local organizations signed on to two important letters to members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The first letter urges Congress to reject a rehash of a bad Bush-era bill that NOW and its allies defeated back then. It needs to be rejected again! The second letter urges support for paid sick days.

The deadline is very tight: the National Partnership will present these letters to members of Congress at a briefing on May 2nd, so please let them know you want to sign on by May 1st.

Below is the National Partnership's information about the letters. Please consider signing both!

1. Oppose the Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1406), which is an empty promise - a smoke-and-mirrors bill - that offers a pay cut for workers without any guaranteed flexibility or time off to care for their families or themselves. This bill will be on the House floor in early May and we must stand strongly against it.

Deadline for signing: May 1, 2013

2. Support the Healthy Families Act (H.R. 1286/S. 631), which would allow workers to earn up to seven paid sick days annually to use to recover from short-term illness, to care for a sick family member, to seek routine medical care or to obtain assistance related to domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. Paid sick days are an important alternative to H.R. 1406.
