Disband the Committee to Attack Women's Health
The shooting rampage at at Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs over the Thanksgiving holiday must be recognized for what it was: an act of domestic terrorism. We must also recognize the role that Republican leaders in Congress have played in creating the environment that made this despicable act possible.
Since last summer, phony videos have circulated falsely accusing Planned Parenthood of illegal actions. Those videos crossed the line of decency, humanity and legality. But instead of renouncing them, Republican leaders in Congress worked hand in glove with extremists to promote the videos, recklessly disregarding the dangerous consequences that their hate-fueled false accusations might have.
Even more reprehensible: after the Colorado Springs attack in which three people were killed, these extremists are forging ahead with more harassment and intimidation of Planned Parenthood in the form of a Benghazi-style “select committee.” Our friends on Capitol Hill have accurately named it the “Select Committee to Attack Women’s Health” because its ultimate goal is nothing short of defunding all Title X family planning clinics, including Planned Parenthood, that provide essential reproductive health services like birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and screenings for STDs and HIV/AIDS.
As the new Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan can stop these vicious attacks on women’s access to basic health care.
