Oppose Confirmation of Rep. Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services
Rep. Price Supports Dismantling Crucial Healthcare Programs – Rep. Tom Price, M.D. (R-Ga.) should not be confirmed as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Price has repeatedly voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). An alternative plan proposed by Rep. Price contains none of the provisions that protect women’s access to health care, including one that prohibits sex-based discrimination. Rep. Price has also pushed for the conversion of Medicare into a voucher program and Medicaid into a block-grant system, which would result in reduced access to health care services and higher out-of-pocket costs for seniors, persons with disabilities and lower-income adults and their children.
Price Supports Policies that Harm Women and LGBTQIA Individuals – Rep. Price’s views on reproductive health are extreme and would endanger women’s lives, halt stem cell research, ban abortion at 20 weeks, prohibit private insurance of abortion care, deny low-income women coverage for abortion care, and prohibit the use of certain forms of contraception and in vitro fertilization. Rep. Price has repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood. He has supported religious exemption laws (including the First Amendment Defense Act, of which he is a cosponsor) that would allow health care providers and insurers to refuse to provide necessary reproductive health care for women, and to openly refuse service and treatment to LGBTQIA individuals, single mothers, and unmarried couples, under the guise of protecting “religious liberty.” Rep. Price’s troubling beliefs show that he is not willing to represent and advocate for all individuals as the nation’s top health official, and that he is unworthy of the job.
Rep. Price’s Policies Will Have Harmful Consequences – Tom Price should not be confirmed as HHS Secretary. As a physician, his extremist views make him all the more objectionable. Tom Price’s record on women’s healthcare access alone should disqualify him. Safety net programs such as Head Start, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and funding for community health centers and child care centers are all at risk if Price is confirmed. Rep. Price’s apparent conflict of interest and insider trading on stocks related to the health care industry should raise a red flag. The Department of Health and Human Services is critically important and deserves a leader who seeks to expand access to health care for all individuals, will protect safety net programs and demonstrates high ethical standards. That person is NOT Tom Price.
